The Metropolis of Cagayan de Oro, also known as “Dakbayan sa Cagayan de Oro” in Cebuano and “Lungsod ng Cagayan de Oro” in Tagalog, is a first-class, heavily urbanized city in Northern Mindanao. It serves as the provincial capital of Misamis Oriental, where it is physically located but is administered separately from the provincial administration. It has 728,402 residents, according to the 2020 census.

Cagayan de Oro City is the economic, commercial, technological, and adventure tourism hub of Mindanao. Actually, it has emerged as the principal convention facility for the Visayas as well. Convention planners have access to various venues, including huge convention halls and reasonably priced training facilities. It is known as the “City of Golden Friendships” and serves as Northern Mindanao’s regional growth hub and investment focal point. Additionally, it serves as a transshipment hub for the industrial and agricultural output of the adjacent provinces.

The largest district in Mindanao, the Segundo Distrito de Misamis, was one of the politico-military districts created by the Manila Spanish in 1818. The present-day Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Camiguin, Bukidnon, Lanao, Zamboanga del Norte, and the northern portion of Cotabato made up this region. The town of Misamis, now known as Ozamis City, served as the nation’s capital, and a fort and garrison were built that was larger than those in Cagayan. Cagayan was designated as the permanent capital of the Second District of Misamis by an order issued on February 27, 1872, by Spanish Governor General Carlos Maria de la Torre. The Casa Real de Cagayan, constructed in 1831 on the site of the present-day city hall of Cagayan de Oro, housed the Spanish politico-military rulers of Misamis, who were all lieutenant colonels.

The town’s previous name was “Cagayan de Misamis” during this time period. The Recoletos built the wooden cross known as “Santa Cruz” outside the San Agustin Church in 1888. Today, it still exists.

Cagayan de Oro is situated along the north-central coast of Mindanao. The provinces of Bukidnon and Lanao del Norte border the city’s southern edge. Both Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, and the town are bordered by the municipality of Opol.
